For over ten years, CSCS has worked with high level professional and amateur athletes to optimize outcomes for each athlete, team, and organization. Balance Engineering is collaborating with CSCS to bring the Equilibrate System to professional and college athletes.

Balance Engineering has integrated the Arena Health Systems’ Phys-X Exercise Instruction Software into the Equilibrate System, creating a full-featured, one-stop solution for comprehensive balance assessment and exercise rehabilitation instruction.

In 1993, Arena Health Systems (Point Arena, CA) developed the first Windows™-based exercise therapy software for physical therapy clinics, athletic trainers and doctors. Designed to make it easy for caregivers to provide home exercise therapies for their clients, Arena’s Phys-X Exercise Instruction Software delivers over 900 illustrated exercises that can be customized to meet the specific needs of patients and complements the professional therapy provided by caregivers.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) ( Troy, N.Y.), founded in 1824, was the first engineering college in the US and today is among the nation’s foremost universities in engineering and scientific research. Included in RPI’s curriculum is a requirement that engineering students complete a capstone project in their Design Lab. These company-sponsored projects provide students with real-world engineering experience and organizations with cutting-edge technology and creativity from a team of senior undergraduate and graduate students.

Balance Engineering engaged the RPI Design Lab in the development of the Equilibrate System. The result was a prototype that captured simultaneous and integrated measurements of various body segments that are the major contributors to maintaining and improving balance. It did so in a manner that provided direct, objective scores in a software-driven system. Further, the system solved the problem of how to determine the energy required to maintain balance and overcome sway.

The prototype was utilized as the baseline product for the Balance Engineering solution delivered today. By incorporating the talent of RPI engineers and faculty, the Equilibrate System further grounded itself in fundamental principles of mathematics and engineering that can be counted on to deliver rich, quantitative and objective data.
